Air Conditioning For LARGE Buildings

At Community Cooling we specialize in servicing residential air conditioners. It isn't unusual for us to go on a call to a restaurant, office building, or retail location, but, the bulk of our workload comes from home owners wanting to keep their air conditioners running efficiently and cost effectively.  From 1 1/2 to 5 ton units, or for larger homes even a series of individual air conditioners working toward one common end, different makes, models, and manufacturers ... while they all have their individual traits and characteristics they are all just a different version of the same thing ... for the most part all familiar ground.

One thing we rarely ever see is the air conditioning equipment used to cool large buildings such as shopping malls, hospitals, or large institutions.  Even the smallest of such places contains millions of cubic feet of air that needs to be cooled continuously!  Standard air conditioning equipment, in most cases, would struggle to keep up with the workload.  For an area this large, in order to provide adequate levels of comfort as cost effectively as possible , you need a "chiller."

Chillers circulate cooled water to air-handlers to transfer heat from air to the water. This water then returns to the evaporator side of the chiller where the heat is passed from the water to a liquid refrigerant (freon). The refrigerant then leaves the evaporator as a cold vapor and enters the compressor where it is compressed into a hot vapor. Upon emerging from the compressor, the vapor enters the condenser side of the chiller where heat is transferred from the refrigerant to the water side of the condenser where it is then circulated to an open cooling tower for the final removal of heat by way of evaporation within the cooling tower.

We were afforded an opportunity to take a quick tour and get an inside look at one of these marvels of engineering and made a quick video so we could share it here.  Hope you enjoy it!
