Air Conditioning And Air Quality

A well maintained air conditioner contributes greatly to the quality and comfort of the air in one's home.  Not only does it control the temperature and moisture in the air, but, with the use of a specialized filter designed to catch and remove particulate matter in the air (known as a HEPA Filter or High-efficiency particulate air filter), the air conditioner plays a significant part in purifying the air as well.

The flip side of that coin is that as an air conditioner works in the heat, removing moisture and condensation from the air (latent heat), the a/c equipment itself becomes a perfect environment for the development of numerous types of vegetative growth. Those types of growths that are typically referred to as

Fungus
Algae
Mildew
Mold

Slime and sludge in a drain pan
"I don't know what's growing in there ... but, you can bet you don't want to breathe it!"

Without extensive and thorough training it is often quite difficult to discern which form of growth one may be dealing with, beyond that there are numerous varieties within each of the specific types of growth as well. To determine the exact nature of the growth I always recommend that home owners contact a local certified Mold Remediation Expert to assess their situation and make recommendations.

The problem with these types of growths is that they occur in places where the home owner never sees ... inside of his air conditioning equipment.  This is one of the reasons it is always advisable to have your a/c equipment checked regularly.  Not only is that the best way to operate your equipment efficiently and for as long as possible, it is literally the only way to ensure that you are not taking chances with the quality of air you are breathing.
